The 1975 NLCS (a brief celebration)

With the regular season coming to an end, we are beginning to get the 'list' programs by MLB Network.  This is good for picking out bits and pieces of old broadcast footage that may not have been seen before or may be expanded on in their clip shows.

One such clip popped up during their broadcast of "The 40 Greatest Teams of All Time".  Listed as the 2nd greatest team of all time, the Cincinnati Reds met up with the Boston Red Sox as what is widely regarded as the greatest World Series of All Time.  However, before the Reds could head of to Beantown, they would have to dispatch of the other NL powerhouse of the 70's, the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Reds beat the Pirates handily in Game 1 and 2 of the best of 5 series for the National League pennant.  In Game 3, the Pirates led going into the 8th when they surrendered 2 runs on a Pete Rose 2-run homerun.  The Pirates would tie it up in the bottom of the 9th, only to give up 2 more runs in the 10th.

Sparky Anderson would call on Pedro Borbon to close out the 10th inning, which he did in quick order.  As you can see in the picture here, he is jumping up and down in the beginnings of the celebration with Bench, Concepcion and a quickly approaching Joe Morgan.

The clip is only a few seconds long, however it is clearly from an NBC telecast and in color videotape. In the trading community, Game 3 of the 1975 NLCS seems to not exist.  As most of you know, not much exists of either LCS in the years between their first year 1969 and 1975.

The source of this clip I don't have any information on.  It could be a simple snip from the end of a tape for a nightly news cast, could be part of a tape that MLB has which is damaged and thus they haven't released it.  I would think if that were the case, we would have seen more clips from this game.  I checked the 1975 World Series Collector's Edition for bonus footage and there was nothing shown involving the final out of the NLCS.

  1. MLB has uploaded more of this footage, starting mid at-bat for the final out of the game.
